Conflict
At this point in the story we only see one main conflict with Macbeth. When he was walking with Banquo they came upon three witches. The witches said to Macbeth that he will become king. Macbeth was surprised by this at first, but then thought about it. He wants to become king, and the only way he thinks he can reach this is by killing the current king. This is the main conflict we see in the play so far.

Characterization:
ReplyDeleteMacbeth, the protagonist, has not shown much of himself except through his actions. At first we see Macbeth as a brutal fighter who is noble and loyal to the king. As the wyrd sisters give Macbeth his prophecy of becoming king, a different side of him begins to show. Along with being noble it is expected that he has good morals and values. During his aside to the audience Macbeth's character begins to show a different side. As he contemplates killing Duncan to become king he shows that his morals may be corrupt. Although being percieved to his wife as not strong enough, we know that Macbeth's darker character will shine through as the play goes on.

ReplyDeleteYou may want to revisit your initial assumption that there is only one conflict at this stage in the play. Obviously there is the external conflict between Scotland and Norway and the physical battles that Macbeth faces. You could say that there is only one major internal conflict presented thus far. This is the central conflict, and why some of the elements of the conflict may change, it will permeate through the play's entirety.
