In the beginning of act III Macbeth sends out kingsmen to kill Banquo. At this point Banquo and his son Fleance are out of the area riding on their horses. While they are in the woods, they are attacked. Banquo is killed but his son manages to escape. During the murder Macbeth is hosting a dinner party at his castle. Here he toasts to Banquo for being so noble and such a good friend. The setting of the dinner party is luxurious. This setting is important because here Macbeth should be acting noble, kind, and showing his guests how he is a great king. But in this scene Macbeth hallucinates and sees the ghost of Banquo, whom he just had men kill. His guests are there to witness Macbeth freaking out and yelling at nothing but an empty chair. As Lady Macbeth tells the guests that Macbeth is just ill they all leave, but with a question brewing in their minds.
