As we have seen in the last 2 acts, Lady Macbeth wears the pants in the relationship and even seems to have some of the smarts as well. When Macbeth is in a sticky situation, seeing King Duncan magically appear in front of all his guests, Lady Macbeth steps to the plate and claims that these illusions are seen regularly by Macbeth and his paroxysm does not come to a surprise to her. By quickly reacting, Macbeth's shady freak out is mostly covered up. If she had not thought so quickly their cover could have been blown if Macbeth stayed in front of his guests and mentioned anything about slaying Duncan. Lady Macbeth not only convinced Macbeth to kill Duncan to become king, but she is also able to cover up for her fragile husband when he is too weak to do so. I feel that Lady Macbeth is an evil spouse for putting Macbeth up to this, but at least she was there to help him and hide their secret instead of letting him sell himself out and acting as though it comes as a surprise to her.
The ghost of Banquo appears in this scene, not the ghost of Duncan.

ReplyDeleteJust because Lady Macbeth sways Macbeth does not mean that she 'overpowered' him. She is manipulative but you have to be in order to get what you want. If Macbeth was gay and his husband wanted to be queen, he wold have done the same thing. However he would have been viewed as cunning and clever. The same thing happens in today's society where women who are cleaver and are willing to go to great lengths for something they want are cast aside and a man who does the same thing is praised and idolized.
ReplyDeleteNahhht. you are wrong, she is a manipulative B*"#ch. No matter if I was gay or straight I would consider my partner manipulative if they convinced me to murder someone, not "clever" or "cunning". Sexual orientation has nothing to do with this...
